General Visiting Hours

Selimiye Mosque is an active place of worship and is open every day of the year. Unlike museums, it does not have fixed opening and closing times. Instead, its accessibility follows the rhythm of Islamic prayer times, which shift throughout the year with sunrise and sunset.

Important: These times are approximate and shift with the seasons. In summer, the mosque stays open much later (until after 20:00). In winter, evening hours are shorter.

Friday Prayers (Cuma Namazi)

Friday is the most important day of the week for Islamic worship. Selimiye Mosque closes for an extended period on Fridays for the congregational noon prayer:

  • Closure period: Approximately 12:00-14:00 (can extend to 14:30 during busy periods)
  • What happens: The mosque fills with local worshippers for the Friday sermon (hutbe) and congregational prayer
  • Recommendation: Visit in the morning (09:00-11:30) or after 14:30 on Fridays

If you happen to be near the mosque during Friday prayers, the experience of hearing the call to prayer from four minarets simultaneously is extraordinary — even from outside.

Ramadan Schedule

During the holy month of Ramadan, the mosque's schedule adjusts:

  • Daytime: Normal visiting hours apply, though staff may be less available
  • Evening (Teravih prayers): The mosque is extremely busy with worshippers for the special Ramadan evening prayers. Visiting is not ideal during this time.
  • Best Ramadan visiting time: 09:00-11:00, when the mosque is relatively quiet
  • Iftar time: The mosque courtyard and surrounding area become very crowded around sunset when the fast is broken

Special Religious Holidays

During Eid al-Fitr (end of Ramadan) and Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice), the mosque hosts special holiday prayers in the early morning. These periods draw large crowds. For a peaceful visit during holidays, come in the afternoon.

Museum Hours

The adjacent Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts has fixed hours:

Winter (Nov-Mar)09:00-17:00Monday

Best Times to Visit

  • Late afternoon (16:00-18:00 summer): Soft western light gives the dome an amber glow
  • Golden hour exterior: 30 minutes before sunset provides the best light for exterior photographs of the mosque against the sky

  • Weekday mornings (09:00-11:00): Fewest visitors, most tranquil atmosphere
  • Winter months: Tourist crowds are minimal

For Cultural Immersion

  • Friday after 14:30: Experience the mosque as local worshippers are departing — you can feel the living spiritual energy of the place
  • Ramadan evenings (from outside): Watching worshippers gather for Teravih prayers is a memorable cultural experience

Times to Avoid

  • Friday 12:00-14:00: Closed for congregational prayers
  • Weekend afternoons in summer: Peak tourist season, can be crowded
